Tempo’s 2022 Q Theatre season was a fantastic two week run of eight delightfully diverse live works. This was our first season showing live works at Q Theatre since 2018, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Keep an eye on Our Living Archive from early next year to see the full 2022 gallery uploaded.
Kete
Our Q Theatre season began with Kete, a collection of contemporary dance works showcasing the creative taonga of Tāmaki Makarau based choreographers. HALF | LIFE
The second show to premiere on opening night was HALF | LIFE, a new full length work choreographed and directed by Loughlan Prior and composed by Claire Cowan and Tom Dennison. The performance incorporated ground-breaking MiMU music technology, and explored the vertical integration of digital space by Filament Eleven 11, with live performance below. Station
Our 2022 Q Theatre season also included the revival of Freshman’s Dance Crew’s Station, a neo-Pacific street dance theatre show that tells the stories of characters from different walks of life as their worlds collide at the local train station. Photographed by Nina Pouesi.
Kiko
Kiko premiered as part of Tempo: Te Rerenga o Tere, and was the result of a two-week creative residency (through Atamira’s choreographic Tuakana programme) and featured participating artists Kelly Nash, Nancy Wijohn, Taane Mete, Sean MacDonald and Atamira dancers Abbie Rogers and Caleb Heke. KLASH
Aotearoa’s finest street dancers took over Q Theatre on a quest for dominance with KLASH - a battle of clans and rulers of circles hosted by Projekt Team and Tempo. Only one clan could rise above the rest to claim victory, and in the end team Astro Andy slid ahead of the competition to secure the win! Photographed by Maddie Daybell.
Gudirr Gudirr
Tempo Dance Festival and Q Theatre were honoured to host the Aotearoa premiere of Marrugeku’s acclaimed show Gudirr Gudirr. Marrugeku is an unparalleled presence in Australia, dedicated to Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians working together to develop new dance languages that are restless, transformative and unwavering. Body of Work + QWERTY Double Bill
