Mānawatia a Matariki

From our Kaihautū Kaiwhakahaere | Executive Lead | Aaron Huata

Ka puta Matariki, ka rere Whānui, ko te tohu tēnā o te tau e!

As Matariki rises and illuminates the night sky, ushering in the Māori New Year, we embrace a time of reflection, hope, gratitude, and renewal. As we reflect on the past year, we remember those we have lost and wish them peace on their spiritual journeys among the stars. We express our gratitude for our whānau, both by blood and community, taking a moment to acknowledge the aroha, joy, and comfort they bring us. With hope, we set our intentions for the year ahead, wishing that your dreams become reality and that the year brings you peace, growth, and fulfilment.

On behalf of the Tempo whānau, I extend our gratitude to the dance community for their patience, support, and aroha as we navigate new directions, explore partnerships, and innovate dance for Tāmaki Makaurau. I honour all who have steered the Tempo waka over the past 24 years—talented, dedicated individuals who have collectively shaped Tempo into Aotearoa’s ‘longest-standing dance event’.

We’re pleased to announce that this year’s festival programme will be revealed soon. Collaborating with Moss and his team has been a rewarding experience for Tempo, and we look forward to having everyone join us at the festival in October.

Kia ora e te iwi o te toi kanikani,

It’s incredibly exciting to be programming Tempo Dance Festival - Te Rerenga o Tere for 2024, which marks the Festival’s return to stages in Tāmaki Makaurau after a year’s absence.

The expressions of interest from ngā toi kanikani have been both inspiring and diverse, showcasing a strong commitment to auahatanga from emerging practitioners through to established companies.

We are currently finalising the details and look forward to sharing the full programme with you in the coming weeks as we celebrate 24 years of  extraordinary artistry across Tempo Dance Festival - Te Rerenga o Tere.

AROHIA | IN FOCUS

In Focus: Taonga Tuku Iho, Our Living Archive.

Our Taonga Tuku Iho, a project spearheaded by Dr. Marianne Schultz, stands as an evolving testament to the rich whakapapa of dance. Our archive captures the essence of dance as a living, breathing art form that continually shapes and is shaped by our cultural heritage. Each year within the archive is more than dance performance; it’s a journey weaving through stories, mythology, creative exploration and expression.

We invite you to time travel through the last 23 years of Tempo’s dance history and explore the enduring legacy of dance.

On Birds, and the Imperative of Mystic Flight

It’s said that bird song inspired humanity to speak. Birds in myth are messengers, deliverers of prophecy, and instigators of journeys.

Listening to this podcast, I am drawn into a contemplative space where the ancient echoes of avian communication find resonance with the expressive language of dance. The dialogue between myth and movement in the episode reminds me that both speech and dance are profound acts of translation, transforming the intangible essence of human experience into a form that touches the soul and stirs the wairua.

Diaz Grimm - "Pepeha" ft. Diggy Dupé*

Blast this song on your run, at the gym, or while laying flat, and let the energy flow through and compel you.

Released as part of the 14-track album Māui & the Sin, Diaz Grimm has been creating waves in Aotearoa through his interdisciplinary approach to artmaking. I was lucky enough to experience the album release in a movie theatre, where the visual album was presented. It's storytelling is innovative in its own right, combining digital arts, AI image-making, and sonics that blend genres beautifully.

Listen to this song if you want to feel the heat or let off some steam
